Winner of C&G Medal of Excellence 2014

Ms. Ganga Edirisinghe won the City & Guilds Medal of Excellence, for the field of Advanced Technician Diploma in Construction Engineering/Quantity Surveying. She was also the only female medal winner in Sri Lanka in year 2014



Competency Standards Development for TVET Sector in Pakistan

A one week training programme on competency standards development was organized from 14-18th July 2014 at Marriot Hotel Islamabad. The training was supported by the TVET Reform Support Programme, which is funded by the European Union, the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the Federal Republic of Germany and the Royal Norwegian Embassy and has been commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH is implementing this programme in close collaboration with the National Vocational and Technical Training Commission (NAVTTC).

Twenty (20) Participants attended this training programme. They were drawn from the TVET sector in Pakistan and are working in NAVTTC, Provincial Technical Education & Vocational Training Authorities (TEVTA), Boards of Technical Education, Trade Testing Boards and related industry. Most of them have already gone through DACUM trainings and have been conducting DACUM workshops and CBT curricula development activities. The core objective of this training programme was to further enhance the skills & knowledge of the participants in the field of competency standard development (based on best international practices and in the context of Pakistan).

The trainers for this programme were arranged by Skills International from its pool of international consultants. Consequently, Messrs Joe Spencer & Graeme Wilson from Scotland, UK carried out the delivery of the training program, which received many accolades from the participants. 



MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) of TDCP (Tourism Development Corporation Punjab) ITHM

On the 21st of September 2013, TDCP-ITHM signed an MOU with Skills International for the promotion of hospitality and tourism studies. The main object of signing this MOU was to promote the hospitality and tourism sector of Punjab. The entire TDCP-ITHM team was present at the ceremony along with their MD. According to their MD the main focus was not only to raise the standard of hospitality & tourism sector in Pakistan but also to raise the standard of the work force in the sector as well. It is for this reason that they decided to train their employees and students with internationally recognized City & Guilds Qualifications. The PSDF provided the institution with funds to train up to 300 citizens of Punjab.

The TDCP Team is keen to promote the Tourism Sector in Pakistan overall, and keeping in view Sri Lanka’s success in this sector, they want to follow their best practices in Pakistan. Skills International will be working hand in hand with TDCP in order to make this sector flourish in Pakistan.

Pakistan Post Foundation (PPF) signs MOU with Skills International - Sri Lanka to train 150,00 youth

PPF has signed a MOU with SKILLS to conduct training courses to existing postal employees as relevant to obtain internationally accepted certifications as well as courses to children (youth) of existing postal employees who are looking for employment or career change opportunities.

In order to implement and sustain such activity both parties agreed to jointly seek funds from local as well as international donors to launch a nationwide development program targeting around 150,000 youth.



Hashoo Foundation Launches City & Guilds Hospitality Programs

On the 03rd of December 2012, Hashoo Foundation officially launched the implementation of City & Guilds Hospitality Programmes at a ceremony held at the Pearl Continental Hotel in Rawalpindi. Stakeholders from the hospitality industry witnessed this well attended event which was attended by the City & Guilds Regional Manager - South Asia Mr. Mufthy Hashim, Country Director Hashoo Foundation Mr. Ali Akbar and Executive Director Danesh Abeyawickrama of Skills International, the Authorized Representative of City & Guilds in Pakistan.

Mr. Akbar expressed his confidence that with the newly acquired internationally recognized accreditation, the trainees will be able to access greater opportunities and pursue more productive careers both in Pakistan and overseas; thus will be able to better serve their families and Pakistan. 

Mr. Mufthy Hashim, Regional Manager for City & Guilds – South Asia, speaking at the launch, declared that City & Guilds/ Skills international is promoting City & Guilds Programmes aiming at career initiation and advancement. He also spoke of City & Guilds role in building a global world in which all people and organizations can access the skills needed for economic and personal well-being. 

The Hashoo Foundation is a dynamic and progressive non-profit organization which was set up in 1988. The Foundation's vision is to help create an ethical and inclusive society in which people live with dignity and have power over their own lives. It has numerous projects across Pakistan, the US and in the UK. Hashoo Foundation's projects are focused on Economic Development, Education, Skills Development, Humanitarian Assistance, Emergency Relief and Disaster Preparedness. The Foundation has been running training courses in vocational skills including hospitality management since 1988 and will celebrate its Silver Jubilee next year to commemorate 25 years of commitment to serving the most needy and vulnerable members of society.

Punjab - TEVTA Top Performers Feted

Skills International, the authorized representative of City & Guilds in Pakistan, organized an Award Ceremony to recognize the top performing institutes, trainers and exam candidates of the first batch of students recruited for City & Guilds programs at TEVTA Punjab in Pakistan. TEVTA, the Technical Education & Vocational Training Authority of the Punjab Province has launched City & Guilds programmes in 25 Technical and Vocational institutions under the TEVTA umbrella. The City & Guilds programmes were launched in these centres after a Training of Trainer programme was conducted for 13 trades by Skills International.

Cash awards as well as recognition plaques were presented to the top performers at this ceremony held on the 01st of December 2012. Depilex staff led by its legendary Head Mrs. Masarrat Misbah attended a City & Guilds familiarization tour and a training skills workshop prior to launching City & Guilds programmes in their institute. Training Programme for Invigilators and Interlocutors in Lahore & Karachi

Ms. Adrienne Fritz (English Manager, City & Guilds) from Hungary conducted a training program to train Interlocutors & Invigilators in Pakistan. The sole purpose of this training was to equip the trainees with adequate knowledge and skills required to conduct the ESOL/ SESOL examinations being conducted in Pakistan. Ms. Fritz along with the Skills International Team conducted the training sessions on 19th & 20th Nov, 2012 at Sheraton Hotels - Karachi and on 21st & 22nd Nov, 2012 at Hotel One - Lahore. Skills International Country Operations Manager and City & Guilds Country Manager Quality Assurance also participated in the training programmes.

The guidance and knowledge imparted by Ms. Fritz was quite beneficial for the attendees as well as for both the teams present at the training session. Ms. Fritz delivered a detailed training facilitated by Skills International Team covering City & Guilds policies for the conducting of exams along with practical examples.



Gold Medal Winner (Motor Vehicle Engineering) 2011

Skills College of Technology (SCOT) student, Hirantha Tharindu Rajapaksha who won the World Award of Excellence for obtaining the highest marks for Advanced Technician Diploma in Motor Vehicle Engineering was presented with the International Lion Award at the recently conducted City & Guilds Awards Ceremony in London. The International Lion Award is conferred on the best amongst International "Medal of Excellence" winners.

Rajapaksha has been a student of SCOT from the Certificate Level in Motor Vehicle Engineering and was employed at Toyota Lanka as a Trainee. Based on his outstanding achievement in winning the Lion Award, he joined United Motors Lanka PLC as a Management Trainee/Service Advisor and his company recognized his attainment with a cash award.



Memorandum of understanding (MOU) between STEVTA and City & Guilds to bring model STEVTA centres on

On the 26th of January 2012, Sindh Technical Education & Vocational Training Authority (STEVTA) and City & Guilds UK signed an agreement to bring on board model STEVTA centres to introduce City and Guilds' International Vocational Qualifications (IVQs).

With a total of 252 institutes in its network, including 4 Government Colleges of Technology, STEVTA is the leading skill development provider in the province of Sindh. Every year around 15,000 students develop their skills through the STEVTA network. From these Institutes, 10 iconic centres have been selected to implement the City & Guilds programmes.

The agreement was signed by Mr. Abdul Wahid Uqaily, Managing Director STEVTA and Mr. Mufthy Hashim, Regional Manager City & Guilds South Asia in the presence of Hon. Abdul Salam Thahim, Minister for Sindh Technical Education & Vocational Training-Government of Sindh. Also present at the ceremony were Mr. Nazar Ali (Project Director STEVTA), Mr. Danesh Abeyawickrama (Executive Director, Skills International City & Guilds Authorized Representative in Pakistan) and Dr. Masoor Ahmed (Director Assessments & Training STEVTA).
