A historic step towards the achievement of renewable energy goals in Sri Lanka, the country’s first-ever floating solar project is established at the Kiriibbanwewa Reservoir in Monaragala and Chandrikawewa Reservoir in Rathnapura. The project is being granted by the Korean Government as a government-to-government project and developed by the Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority (SLSEA) in collaboration with Skills International which has more than 20 years of experience in undertaking EIA/IEE, environmental audits, and screening reports.
Skills International, a leading consultancy firm, has been privileged to be a part of this pioneering initiative. As the consultant to the project, Skills International’s task was to undertake the feasibility study and to conduct the Initial Environmental Examinations (IEE) for both locations, a crucial step in ensuring the project’s environmental sustainability.
The floating solar project is expected to contribute significantly to Sri Lanka’s renewable energy sector, marking a major step forward in the country’s commitment to sustainable and clean energy solutions. The project also showcases the potential of floating solar technology in harnessing solar power, particularly in countries with abundant water bodies.
The successful implementation of the project at Kiriibbanwewa Reservoir and Chandrikawewa Reservoir is anticipated to pave the way for similar initiatives across the country, thereby bolstering Sri Lanka’s renewable energy capacity and reducing its dependence on fossil fuels.
Stay tuned for more updates on this groundbreaking project and its impact on Sri Lanka’s renewable energy landscape.
